“My biggest motivation? Just to keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long University education that I never had – every day I’m learning something new.” – Richard Branson
That is precisely why I found myself in San Diego on this particular trip….to continue my education (and of course, capture a few images when I had the time!) I had been there many times on the dime of others, illuminating events at several of the area hotel and event spaces, but this was a trip that I chose to take for my own personal advancement.
I have an opinion about the current system of higher education now that we are kind of on the subject. I’ve blogged about it before. so I won’t go too deep tonight with this. The very basic concept that the average student just out of high school has to invest what is the equivalent of the cost of an average American home is on the verge of insanity. In fact, I think that the next big bubble about to burst is in fact the student loan bubble! Mark my words on that one…..
To actually think that the system has the vision to educate the student with the necessary skills for the next 40 to 50 years in any industry in this ever changing and fast paced society is beyond absurd. Personally, I think that a minimal, focused, and strategically designed education followed by in the field training peppered with continuing education throughout life….either in a classroom setting or online environment is the way of the future. I mean, the predictions are that the average person will switch careers about every 4 to 5 years in the very near future. The modern day college system….just one of the many institutions that are about to be outdated, but who am I to know.
I could be wrong…I mean there are much smarter people out there creating our plans for the future. Take congress for example. I hear that they just declared pizza a vegetable. PIZZA! Well done. Way to put that higher education to work!
