Living in isolation – Iceland (and a Happy Fathers Day)

As the end of another Fathers Day creeps up on my, and my little munchkin is fast asleep, its time to reflect on the day. A day spent with her is another chance to create a memory, an opportunity to cement a lifelong relationship. I think I’m doing a pretty good job at that too! I seem to realize this more and more as the days go on. My tunnel visioned drive to reach frequent goals in my career at times seems to be taking a back seat to this. I am sure that is what my dad was trying to do in my early years, I am sure of that. I just sometimes wish, on days like today, that I could understand why he seemed to drift so far away from us in the later years. I am not even sure if he knew that he was doing it. Why didn’t I ask him when he was alive? It sure would be nice to chat about that now, not to confront him of course, but just to get in his head. His life was taken too early. Miss you dad 🙁

Mike – there is so much that we put off saying and put off doing. My son recently reached his 17th birthday – at about 6 ft 2 inches, he is well past the stage where we sit down on the sofa and cuddle; as is my 18 year old daughter. Your words remind me that as we grow older, our relationships change and we must find new ways of expressing how we feel. I wish you peace and thank you for the words that you share with us. The picture is a nice reflection of the mood you express.ReplyCancel

The photo is beautiful, Mike. I was very touched by what you said about your Father. I lost my Dad when he was only 64 years old and I miss him terribly. He was the most wonderful father any girl could want, but wasn’t much of a talker and I now realize how much I didn’t know about him and wish I would have tried harder to get to know him. I have tried very hard with my children and grandchildren to let them know who I am. At the end of your life, you never look back and wish that you had spent more time at the office!!!!ReplyCancel
