On a mission at the Mission

‘I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.’ – Robert Louis Stevenson

Just outside of Carmel, my home base for this little journey exploring the Big Sur area, was this place. Carmel is a great place to nest for a day or 2 before diving into Big Sur. There are all kinds of little shops, art gallerys, and has a really cool “villagey” kind of vibe to it.

I don’t know too much about these Missions at all, but I had a feeling that this one would be a great place to explore thru the lense. Being a tripod friendly venue was also a plus. I have a couple of cool perspectives of the main churches interior that I will get to one of these days!

On a totally unrelated note……I am heading to Ireland via London the beginning of next week. Any or my flickr friends or blog readers from London or Dublin? I’d love to get the insider scoop on great photo site locations! My stay in London will be brief……a day or 2 max….but will be in Ireland for the majority of the trip. Planning on soaking in the beauty of the country side before going to the Oxegen Music festival. It looks like a pretty cool one!

Hi Mike, first of all, great photo today, I’ve always been a fan of church pictures, the different architectural designs are fascinating to me and you have captured this one really well.

To your other point, I don’t live in London myself but not too far out. I’m sure there are people with much better knowledge than myself but one tip I would like to give is to get on the Underground and go to the Embankment stop. This will bring you out at the bridge before the Houses of Parliament (not counting the one next to it) and opposite you will see the London Eye. On your side of the river though are 2 boats which are bars/restaurants (great food and drink there by the way!), I think one of them is called The Castle or similar. Anyway, pop in have a drink and take great views of the river Thames and houses of parliament from the deck.

There are of course many pictures taken of the Houses of Parliament but I rarely (if at all) see them taken from this perspective. Just as an example please click the link (or copy/paste) below which is one I took from that boat last year. It was still very early in my photographic days and I did crop it quite a bit as well. I’m sure the picture you could get with your D3 and talent could be quite extraordinary. All the best, Pete
